2002 Cougar slide out problem please help!

I have a 2002 Cougar Fifth Wheel with an electric slide that suddenly started clicking like if the gear was slipping when trying to bring it back in after camping yesterday. Luckily a very nice guy offered his help and we got it to go in by each of us pushing in on each end while my wife pressed the switch. The motor appears to work but it seems that it's maybe got a stripped gear? Any ideas as to how to begin to repair this? I had tried to bring it in manually with the hexadecimal bolt but wouldn't budge with my Milwaukee impact wrench.

Unless the motor shaft sheared off, if it's turning, it's working. Shear pins and gear box are the places to start if the motor's working. As you'll need to get the gearbox off to check it, you can see what the end of the motor shaft looks like.

  • Thanks guys, that's a great start! I will take a look. If a shear pin did break it must've been inside the motor/gear housing because I couldn't see any movement.
  • Possible that a shear pin sheared. Look under the slide for a square tube bar that goes from to and from each gear rack for a broken pin.
  • Lippert has a LU (Lippert University) web site that might help. And there are some YouTubes associated with it.

Btw, "hexidecimal"? That's "so math!" (From Adventure Time Men)
  • The clutch gear in the gear box for the slide needs to be replaced. Look at the documentation for the slide which will show the gear box and call the manuf and order a new gear box.
