2005 keystone cougar 5th wheel thoughts for first purchase?

We are looking to purchase our first 5th wheel. We are looking to travel cross country this summer with three children. We were looking to originally buy something only a few years old, but came across an older unit that caught my attention due to usage and price. The asking price is $10,900, but is also doesn't meet all our needs. We were looking for 3 bunks, but could due with two since the baby is only 8 months old.

Thoughts on the 2005 cougar model 2811bhs in regards to quality? Do you think this model is work 10K? Am I better buying what I want, spending more 20k plus or trying the camping with the cheaper model for a year or two and upgrading? It appears to be a good deal..thoughts? Description below.

  • My question is how/where has it been stored? Under a shelter, inside a barn or no shelter.
  • My 07 was good. Had some small pluming leaks behind shower and black flusher. Needed slide adjustment etc. appliances all worked well. Overall was pretty happy with it. Upgraded for size and floorplan.
  • I see lots of Cougar 5ers around, many are several years old. There must be something good about them if they're still on the road!
  • I have a Laredo by Keystone and have had a few minor issues. ALL RV's have some issues. Like many said middle of the road for the Cougar's.
  • Seems to be a little overpriced for private party. Should be more in the $9k range. Cougars are definitely not top of the line for Keystone but middle of the road quality. If you are new to 5th wheels, be sure to bring someone along to check the frame, tires, hangers, and major structures before purchase. If two of the tires were replaced, the other two are probably bad also. That is a very long time to sit without having rodent, dry rot issues, etc.
    Good luck with your decision.
  • My 2007 Keystone Cougar was horrible with regards to build quality. However, with that said, I've pretty much replaced all the defective stuff, so now it's fairly reliable. If the one you're looking at works good, then you're probably in pretty good shape.

Used only five times I would be double checking all the appliances, as just sitting isn't good for them. Check the furnace for sure, mud wasps love to setup home inside of them.
New tires and batteries the price is a little low of NADA. If the fit is good for you then it may be the one, Keystone products run about average in workmanship.
