Hello, I am doing some inquiring and was hoping any owners would be able to tell me what they are getting for fuel mileage (diesel) with these rigs specifically looking at dually in the one ton. I currently own a 2008 Ford F450 and pull a 35 foot Open Range fifth wheel. My fuel mileage on this thing is 6-8 mpg when pulling and 10-11.5 empty. I know there are probably other variables but just something in general on highway and in town pulling and not pulling would be great. thanks.
How fast do you tow? I picked up ~1.5 mpg on my '02 D'max 2500 by slowing from 65 to 60 with my low profile Komfort. If you tow at 65+, slowing down can help a lot. Also, a lot of guys who tow a lot of miles tend to be able to narrow down a speed range that seems to be a "sweet spot" where their mileage is best. Might be 61, might be 63; just depends. I was surprised as hell when we made a non-tow trip to Colorado 3 years ago, with a 14 cu ft chest freezer in my truck. Got right at 23 mpg running 75! Having that freezer in my bed =really= changed the aerodynamics. Recently towed a small, lo-pro, FW for a friend back to CO and got < 10 mpg while towing and only about 17 empty on the way back; well under my "normal" mileage. Very disappointed in that, for sure.
