This is not really necessary. All you need to do is push a tape measure down the vent until it bottoms-out -- remember this measurement. Then begin to pull the tape back up until it hooks onto the bottom of the vent. Subtract the second measurement from the first and this will tell you how much distance is between the bottom of the vent and the bottom of the tank. Measure the height of your black tank to see how far into the top of the tank the vent extends -- this should be no more than an inch -- the shorter, the better.
