I was looking at the owner's manual online for the Penguin II low profile unit. They have the reputation for being loud, but it's the best for the front bedroom.
I would think a good mechanic could install the unit in just over an hour. In my unit, the wire to the thermostat is taped to the inside of the paneling behind the light switch. It's meant to be installed above the light switch. The installation is on UTube.com.
Worst prat about putting in such a unit is getting it up on the roof @ 100 lbs. plus. Easiest way is to use an extension ladder extended out as a ramp, and pull the a/c unit up to the roof with a rope.
