* Update*
I found another site that has the same wiring and it states 6/3-8/1 so i'm thinking this is correct.Maybe whoever wrote the other specs must have put in a 1 without thinking.
That is correct!
Seriously it's a easy DIY job. The biggest problem is finding the cable for a decent price.
I found a new 36' 50 Amp RV Extension Cord that has a right angle 50 amp-125/250V plug and connector with handle.The cord plus shipping is $126.57. Then cut the end off and buy a ParkPower 50 Amp Female Connector, $76.19 and put it on the 50A power cord so it will hook up to my RV and I have myself a pliable 50A power cord. Does that sound like a fair price ?. - Cummins12V98Explorer III

Been thinking of buying the cord in 100' spools and making people cords to the length they want and selling them in the Campgrounds for something to do.ependydad wrote:
I'd likely be interested if you ever did this.
You would have to come camp where I would be, the shipping would make it a bad deal.
You're on the road; I'm on the road. Let's coordinate. :)

I never said it was, I said close, some old phone cable used 18 gauge wire! And IMHO it is not really off topic, if anyone were to use 16 gauge wire for a 50 amp cord, it would be a real problem.
Didn't mean to sound argumentative. 30 years with Bell but "telephone wire" and "telephone cable" are not the same where I come from.
Yes, there is 18G "telephone cable" seen out in the far ends of exchanges. - Cummins12V98Explorer III

My fulltiming secret- since I drive from one campground to the next, I just throw the cord in the back of the truck. It hasn't seen the inside of my 5 gallon bucket in a long time. :)GPG52! wrote:
WISH LIST: GOT TO GET ME ONE OF THOSE ELECTRIC REELS..
In the meantime I simply use a square plastic milk carton container. It stores great in the front hatch, easy to pull out and carry to the back of the 5er. I coil the 50 amp cord so that I can get access to either end and pull out only as much as I need.
Poor man's version of the electric reel.
HINTS:
1- if you find your cord hard to handle, sticky etc. try treating it with a silicone spray (never use any oil base lube) this will allow the rubber to slide a little easier against each other.
2- try turning the crate/bucket when coiling the cord vs. trying to twist the 50 amp cord into a coil. Much easier.
3- don't forget to clean the cord and bottom of the crate removing dirt and unwanted bugs/spiders before storing in side your rig.
Enjoy... GPG
Hint #2 is what I found by chance as I wound my cord into a 5 gallon bucket. Works well. I like the idea of shooting it with some silicone spray to make it easier.Cummins12V98 wrote:

I'm looking at those power cords and it says 30' 16/3-8/1 Cord 125-240V.I take it as 3 strands of 16 guage and 1 strand of 8 guage as that makes up the four strands.That seems awful light to me if i'm reading it right.
16g cable is not rated at 50amps. Perhaps you meant 6/3?
10g = 30a, 8g = 40a and 6g = 50a.
16g? That is close to telephone wire, certaintly not power cord!
I know it's not on topic but phone wire is 24g.
