50 amp generator

I am looking for a portable generator with a 50amp circuit but I can't find any that are light or even close to being realistic.

Any ideas?
  • My Yamaha 6300w generator supplies all the power I need using both hot legs.

  • My dad's 25kw Whisperwatt, with a 4 cyl Isuzu diesel, is almost as quiet as a Honda 3000. :-) If I'd only had a heavier hitch built... :-)

  • real workl a 5-6kw generator is all you *need*. 1.2kw is 10 amps, so a 50 amp generator (single 120 feed) is 6kw. The 50 amp input on your trailer is 2 120 volt 50 amp feeds, so a 6kw generator is only 50% of the *max* power, but real world 5kw runs 2 ac's with power to spare. Most of us are camping (non ac) on ~2kw, parallel 2kw or a 3kw gets an AC, parallel 3k gets almost everything. It is far cheaper to heat both air and water with propane then burn gas to make electricity to make heat.
A 30 amp to 50 amp *dogbone* style adapter will take you from a reasonable generator to a 50 amp trailer input. If you really want all 50 amps, you are looking 12kw+ generator.

I am assuming you are looking for a portable 120VAC power source to power-up a 50AMP RV.

The 50AMP service for RV's is actually two ZONES of 120VAC at 50AMP each. Consider this pictorial from Google Search showing a typical shore power wiring for a RV 50AMP service receptacle.

You will need a 12000 WATT generator to produce two zones (or two legs) of 50AMP service. This will not be a portable type generator.

What I would do is use a portable Honda 30001 type generator with a 30AMP RV Receptacle wired like this pictorial

Then I would use a RV50AMP FEMALE to RV30AMP MALE ADAPTER that is wired like this to plug the 50AMP Trailer shore Power cable into..

This will provide 120VAC wired to both 120VAC 50AMP zones in the trailer and will power up only a total of 30AMPS of appliances.

Just me thinking out loud here...

IMO - what you have found (or *not* found) is correct.

However - for everything "Generator" - try the *Tech Issues* forum.

(Just ask the Mod/s to move your thread)

*Tech Issues* folks might enjoy a "Mission Impossible" challenge!..:@

    Good luck.
