It seems to me that the type of locking jaws has evolved more from attempts to design a hitch that wouldnt drop the rig on the truckbed walls. However, Im not convinced that any of the hitches were at fault in the stories I have read.
We had the Reese clamshell style and loved it. I always knew when the hitch properly latched by the arm snapping back into position when the kingpin was fully seated. I would buy another without question. Im not familiar with the laminated unless it is the Curt style where the clamshell overlaps slightly.
