5th Wheel Jacks Won't Retract

Just returned home from Florida and un hooked trailer yesterday.

Today, cleaned and unloaded trailer after 2 months away and went to hook up to return trailer to storage area but jacks will not retract!

I can raise trailer but cannot lower does this sound like a switch or motor issue? It is a Rockwood Signature Ultra Light 8285WS.

Fortunately it is in my driveway and I have my truck for transportation but cannot get the car out and I think the dealership I bought the trailer from is closed Sunday & Monday

    X2 here! Good luck.

My first guess is the switch. Those cheap switches pass a lot of current every time you you activate them. As a test you can swap the two power leads at the jack motor. IF it then goes up but not down then you know your problem.

I had the same issue w/ my 5er and it was the switch. My jacks would retract but not extend. I did the swap on the leads and had the reverse problem so I knew it was the switch.

I also would suspect the switch, or possibly a loose/broken wire.
And yes the crank handle (one of them if you have more than one) is for manually operating the jacks.
X's 2 on the switch or loose wire if it only goes one way but not the other.

  • The inline fuse has been replaced by an appropriate breaker that resets (like you have in your car for power windows) and it is live because it will extend. I did the fuse replacement because I had blown a fuse when the trailer was new when I retracted the jacks. I also replaced the fuses with breakers that reset for the large slide and the wardrobe slide as they were conveniently hidden behind electrical center that contains the breakers and 12v fuses.(great Ahmish electrical wiring)DW always leaned on the wardrobe slide too long

There is a crank in the storage area I have never had it out - I thought it was for slide retraction.

Where would the crank fit to move the jacks?

  • I'm not much of a 5th wheel guy, but my campground neighbor had the same problem last summer. I found a blown fuse that was probably caused by reversing the motor before it had stopped. The hardest part was finding the fuse which was conveniently hidden under the battery box.
  • I have a inline fuse that blows sometimes! Check the wires from the motor and see if there is a fuse!
