5th wheel mounting

I am in need of some info . I am a truck camp guy but I came over here for info on setting up my truck for 5th hitch. I have to go to Florida to pick up a 5th wheel camper and I am in NY. Ok the camper is a 36' and has the top part of the hitch with the camper a 18,000 lb. rees hitch. Any sugestions on what I should have for a mounting system. I would porfere a mounting system that would not interfer with my truck camper . Or something that would be easly removed. I have a SRW gmc 3500 2011 truck long box crew cab 6 liter gas motor. Thanks
  • Judging from your first post it sounds like you already have the hitch....just need a rail kit. $130 for a reese universal rail kit. They will stick up about an inch-inch and a half in the bed like someone else said but if this is just a one time deal why not just take it back out and sell it on craigslist? The other thing to consider is you'll have to drill holes through your bed to put the rails in. I also agree with others about hauling it with that 6L.....gonna get expensive but I think you'll still come in under what it would take to pay someone to haul it.

That sounds like a idea too, Thanks for the input !!
  • I think I have to agree that while it is nice of you to try to help a friend, the economics are not going to work.

Call a local RV dealer and see who they use for transport and then get a quote. Between now and mid-April you may be able to find somebody who needs a back-haul and get a good price.
  • It isn't a cheap installation...The "part of a Reese hitch" isn't going to help you much if you don't have a base for it and as mentioned, you need a rail system attached your truck to use the hitch and it won't be cheap...the rails, once installed in the bed of the truck aren't the easiest things to remove either, (been there, done that)....Sounds like cheapest, easiest way to get it where you want it would be pay someone else to do the job...and the 6.0 gas engine whether it's one trip or not...will NOT be happy..but apparently it doesn't matter. Unless you're going to tow it more than just one time...pay someone else to do it.
  • Honestly, for what you will pay for getting a hitch set up which will not interfere with your TC, it may be a better deal to hire someone to transport it. You did not say if you were bringing it back to NY from FL or where you were taking it. But you'll need an under bed mounting system unless your truck is gooseneck hitch prepped. So you're probably looking at $1,400 plus installation ($500 for the under bed gooseneck hitch and $900 for the companion hitch) to set up hitch. Travel money down and back. Guessing 1,200 miles (Orlando to Albany) to throw out some numbers. The RV transport guys get around $1.65 a mile or about $2,000 to move it for you.

Ken, Thanks I know about the gas motor. It is what I have, and it is a one time trip to help out family.

Seriously, you are going to pull a 36' 5er with a 6.0L gasoline engine? I don't think you will be happy.

The hitch you have will require rails mounted in the bed of the truck and will not allow the slide in camper to set on the floor of the truck.

For you slide in to be used, you will need to go with a B7W Turn over ball and a Companion hitch.

  • I just went through that. Install a B&W turnover ball. That will leave you with a flat bed for your camper. Then order an ANDERSEN Ultimate 5th wheel hitch. The Aluminum version only weighs 32 lbs. The steel version about 75 lbs. You will then be able to easily use any configuration.

  • I assume you need a rail kit that is generally attached to the frame rails of the truck and sticks up about an inch and a half above the truck bed. They are not considered removable. I don't know if they would interfere with your truck camper, but I would think they would.

Here is something that may work but is not cheap.

    Hope this helps Keith
