5th wheel opinions

We have been 5er owners in the past. (keystone montana 36ft 3 slides) We have been in motor homes for the past 7 years. For the last 3 years we have been full time in a 39 ft Holiday Rambler 4 slides. We just purchased property and will now be snowbirds. Seems the move back to a 5er makes sense. We have been spoiled by the fit and finish of the HR. What brands should we avoid? Which are best, which are caddies, which are chevies, which are Yugos. I know Mobile Suites are very high end.

Thanks in advance for your input!

  • We also bought a Grand Design. We bought ours used so we didn't get to enjoy the great customer service they tout. But they at least talked to us about some of the issues we had and "tried" but failed to be able to help because our rig was not even in factory warranty anymore. At least they offered to fix something even tho we were second owners. The leather furniture in the first few years of production had a flaw where they tear easy. Also there are some Lippert issues with using **** grease in the axles that is so thin it leaks into the wheel and brakes (easy fix by repacking bearings). For those that bought new are really pleased with the service and there is a Facebook page where you can directly talk to their service reps who seem to get right on it if you have an issue. Grand Design has since been bought by Winnebago. So far everything seems to be the same, but who knows what the future will bring?
  • We still have our 2007 Montana. It has been as trouble free as we could have ever hoped for. Don't know if the new ones are as good or not. Keep in mind that the "high end" rigs are typically heavy and may need more truck than lighter models.
  • It seems I read people saying happy things about Cedar Creek even though it is owned by Forest River.

I tried to make a list once but didn't get very far in soliciting input.

  • Grand Design is in the sweet spot of the market. Going up you don't see much value for the added cost and they build a nice unit for the price.

Grand design seems to make a fairly good product.

X2 ^^. After getting some bugs ironed out (they all have them), we've been happy in ours. They make several lines... we're in a "mid-profile" Reflection. The Solitudes are heavier and have a drop-down frame. Grand Design's customer service is among the best in the industry.

  • If looking at new you might want to check out the River Stone and also their Legacy line, we have been very pleased with ours. You did not mention a price range but they are lower then the DRV
  • Don't buy a Cruiser. I've had many problems and the manufacturer doesn't back what they sell!
  • We prefer the Montana as well, we still have our '08 and other than the carpeting being a little dirty, still a great unit. We also agree with azdreyheat, about "used" units, we never buy new anymore, cars or campers. We had numerous problems with our Jayco, (bought it new) it took a year and a half to get all the problems solved then kept it 5 years and got the Montana used, never had a problem of any kind. Good Luck and Happy Camping !!!
  • 5th wheels are still made as quickly and as cheaply as possible. They may look pretty on the surface but when you peal back a layer you'll see the sloppy workmanship with no quality control. My Voltage had plenty wrong with it when we bought it new and we were sorry we ever bought it. Once I fixed everything, that should have never passed a QC inspection at the factory, we now are happy with it. My recommendation is never buy new. Buy used with the bugs already worked out.
