I think the combination of opposing forces in this incident might have very caused just about any similar hitch design to separate.
What other hitch is designed like the B&W? I mean every hitch I am familiar with has a solid steel cross member connecting the two uprights. Actually on mine, the head sits in saddles that are part of the cross member. B&W has nothing to keep the two uprights from spreading apart as they did.
The Hitchhiker certainly held up well.
