5th wheel rollover accident

With B/W hitch: Link

We saw a TT rollover on a backroad in Idaho and the TT was reduced to splinters and scrap sheet metal. There were a large number of propane tanks tho, 4 or so. So I wondered if the owner was up to no good....

No, it's not designed to separate, they just got lucky when the post bent and allowed the hitch to come free from the base. That also probably helped limit damage to the trailer since the weight of the truck wasn't trying to twist the trailer all around.
  • I agree with fj12ryder, I wouldn't have swerved, and just hit them. That's why I have a decent bumper up front.

  • Like they always say about a fall: it's that sudden stop at the bottom that hurts. The trailer didn't roll over, it just slid on its side and came to a halt. Probably would have been a different story if it has struck the median with any real force, or slid off and down an embankment.

An excellent example of why swerving is rarely a good idea, doubly so when hauling something large behind you. :)
  • The Hitchhiker fiver looked impressive, especially after rolling on its side at 60 mph.
The people were lucky to drive away.
  • I was sort of stuck in Colorado during a cold snap one time and burned 30 pounds of propane a day plus had an electric heater running all the time N ah ain't no teararist.
