The OP's primary complaint seemed to be surging (fore/aft forces imparted on the tow vehicle by the 5th wheel). If you currently have a solid pin box extension, this problem can be greatly reduced with a pin box extension that provides damped fore/aft articulation between the tow vehicle and 5th wheel. In the past, I've used and can highly recommend the Demco GlideRide pin box extension. It reduced the surging of a previous 16K GVWR 5th wheel by probably 85-90%. Our current 19K GVWR 5th wheel was factory equipped with the TrailAir tri-glide pin box extension that provides fore/aft compliance similar to the Demco with the addition of an air spring (airbag) and shock absorber to provide vertical compliance between the 5th wheel and tow vehicle.
