A change is coming..

I have owned three class A's over the years. I just sold my last one, a 2002 Fleetwood Southwind 37U. I have enjoyed my class A's, but for several reasons I feel a 5th wheel is the way for me to go now. Mainly for my wife's comfort. Winds and big trucks, would blow us around in the class A and she didn't take too kindly to that. So needless to say we didn't go camping as much as I would have liked to.
So, now my plans are to get a 2015 Ford F 350 DRW, 3:73. for my tow, and a DRV 38RESB3 for my FW. I'm not new to RVing, but I am new to a 5th wheel. How they drive and maneuver, and hopefully will handle the winds and big trucks better than the class A I had.
Any comments, or advise would be welcomed.
Thanks

  • All I can say, is I would go drive all three pickup trucks on the market. You might be surprised which one you liked the best. Chris
  • I think the difference for you will be like night and day. We have had several fifth wheels and 2 motorhomes. The first motorhome was a gas which was a nightmare to drive. It wandered all over the road. The second was a 39' diesel pusher which was much better to drive but would still get some pushing by trucks and wind even after I added Koni shocks, front and rear stabilizer bars and a Safe-T-Plus steering stabilizer. Getting rid of the Goodyear tires also helped some but even after that I still had to pay attention or it would wander a bit.

When we changed to our current rig 2 years ago I was absolutely amazed at the stability, even with the passing trucks and side winds. We did get some chucking which I addressed by adding a set of Air Lift suspension bags. My mistake was trying to get by with a truck that would do the job but pushed the limits. We are trading in our 2012 GMC 3500 single rear wheel for a 2015 dually. I suspect the ride will be even better especially with the Hensley BD3 air ride hitch I recently got.

Craig's wife and mine must be related because mine was very unhappy at first. She loved the freedom the motorhome gave her going down the road. It took a while but she is over it and loves the room and comfort the fifth wheel gives us.

You made a really nice choice for a rig. You will enjoy it.
  • Couple things I would like to add to your first experiance. When I went from Class A to 5th wheel the wife was not a happy camper. You have to remember you are riding in a TRUCK and no matter how nice it looks its a truck. I installed 5th AB pin box to help with the chucking. I was even thinking of getting air ride seats but the cost was way to much. Just a little warning.

Second once you get your rig take it a empty parking lot and pratice, pratice. Pratice backing, right turns stopping get some traffic cones to help you.
  • Our DRV should be in early May and can't wait to get out of the class A. Get some practice backing in and enjoy your new unit.
  • You won't get that wallowing effect from wind and semis or the rolling in corners you feel in a bus. You will know the trailer is there and I'd advise an air ride hitch to minimize the effects of the trailer on the truck.
  • That's a mighty nice rig your getting and BIG TOO. Not too sure your going to be any better off with wind and big rigs though. I have never driven a class A but I would think it isan't any worse than a 38ft fifth wheel. Just give your wife some Vicodin and just tell her its much better, she might never notice :-)
