AC or Thermostat issue

I have a 2007 Challenger 5th wheel 35CKQ with either having air conditioner or thermostat problem not sure which. When the AC is turned on it runs for a short time but pops the AC breaker, but the furnace tries to run at the same time. I have checked all fuses / breakers. I have double checked the connections to the convertor and tightened any and all loose connections. Another thing I've noticed is the AC / heater has issues when the center lights to the living room will not turn on. It seems when the lights are working correctly the AC works correctly. I have disabled the wiring to this light switch and tried running the AC again, the same issue with the AC and furnance trying to run at the same time happens.
  • The thermostat did not fix our problem. Finally reached a person in the service department from the dealership we purchased camper. Came to the conclusion that there is a ground wire up in the AC that wasn't grounding correctly. Once I grounded that wire everything works great now. Thanks for all your suggestions.
  • Thanks for the advise. Have ordered a thermostat ... If that doesn't fix our problem we will take the camper to dealer where we purchased for professional help.
  • I would be looking at the thermostat first, especially with a 6 year trailer that has traveled many miles over rough roads. BTDT :W
  • Sounds like the thermostat is telling the a/c and heater to come on at the same time. If nobody has messed up the wiring, I suspect the thermostat. I replaced my rv thermostat with a $20 Hunter walmart digital. Best mod if ever did. I love the one degree variance and no more bumping the thermostat trying to get it to cycle. I just have to keep 2 AA batteries in the thermostat.
  • Just a question. Is the thermostat on AUTO? If it is and the furnace is trying to run too you need to put it on AC only. That could be your problem.

  • Wonder if you might have a intermitant short somewhere, I would check for some warm wires at the ac unit. Don't use the ac until you get it fixed. Fire hazard.
  • I recommend you take it in to your RV repair shop. I would think they have the proper testing tools and the ability to obtain the electrical diagrams for your unit. Unless you have very good insurance on it.
  • Are the center lights flourescent? If yes, one could have a ballast going bad that effects the thermostat signal to the AC unit and/or furnace.
Turn off, lights. Reset the thermostat by turning off all units, remove fuse for 10-15 seconds. Re-install fuse and let the system reboot. This could take 15-20 minutes.
  • There might be an electronic board in the AC that controls both the AC and furnace.
