I have the aluminum version that's lowered (for a flatbed truck). I've said before that I have it out of necessity rather than purposefully choosing it. The gooseneck ball and overall arrangement of my flatbed would not have allowed any other type of fifth wheel hitch to be installed without significant modifications. So I ended up with the AUH.
That being said, the product works and its ease of installation/removal is simply unparalleled. I've had no troubles with mine and am considering buying one for my new truck as well. It is a little annoying to have to lift the trailer so high for hitching and un-hitching, but that's really not too much of an issue.
I chose to skip the safety chains, because I don't feel that there's really any significant safety concern. In my opinion, the connection point really isn't any less secure than a typical fifth wheel hithch connection.
