Annual Leaking Toilet Seal

Have you replaced the ball and the seal at the same time?

Forget the scapper for the crapper.. use olive oil.

I just use a regular toilet bowl brush for mine. Open the flapper all the way, give the brush a few spins in the hole and it holds water again.

You don't let it dry out, do you? I keep RV antifreeze in the bowl all winter. If it dries out, it's shot. I also use silicone spray on it once in a while.

Plumbers Grease lasts about a two weeks for me. After dumping, while I have the throw away gloves on, I come in and put a bit of the grease on my finger and grease the underside of it. Would olive oil be better and last longer?

Also, how hard is it to replace that seal? I don't want to start messing with it because I don't know how to replace it.

Someone on one of these forums recommended pure Silicone grease like that used for scuba gear. I bought some for ~$10 from Amazon and after a couple of applications it is working quite well. It took a few days to have an effect, but now the seal is working about as well as it ever did.

Yup, every year. Sounds like our toilet until the last time I replaced the seal and we quit using strong cleaners in/on the toilet. We now use the spray Thetford cleaner, which works great, and now haven't done anything with the seal in 3 years!

If you let the seal dry out bwt trips, it's toast... water evaporates quickly... any kind of cooking oil or antifreeze works great.

Haven't replaced a toilet seal yet in over 100,000 miles (3 TT's to be honest about it). I discovered if I store the toilet with half a cup of olive oil on top of seal, it stays great. I actually carry a small bottle with us and if pedal gets even a touch stiff I add a little overnite, which fixes it. Use it maybe twice a year. Try it, what do you have to lose?
