Anyone ever converted an enclosed trailer into a toyhauler?

I lived in a rv for a few years back several years agoso i have an idea of what I need and want.

I've decided that my next tt will be able to carry my Jeep with me but all the ones I've seen are huge and expensive. My truck isn't capable of hauling such a beast and I don't have room to store it.

I know that they make race trailers with living quarters but I haven't seen anything that I really like.

I've been looking at all options including a truck camper and then just pulling my Jeep on my trailer or flat towing it but that idea really doesn't really blow my skirt up.

So now I'm thinking that I could buy a 24-28' enclosed trailer that's capable of hauling a vehicle and build up a living quarters suited to me. All I want is a full bathroom with toilet, stand up shower, and a sink. I would have a small shelf area for storage and a fold up bed along side the cargo area where the jeep would be. Oh and AC is a must here in S. Texas.

Of course there's plumbing issues and holding tank issues as well as other things but I'm not concerned. I have a welder and other fabrication tools as well as access to mills and lathes, metal breaks, etc. I know I can do it but i'm curious if anyone else has.

  • Our first toy hauler we built ourselves. It started life as a 24' enclosed car hauler. I added a full marine bath, kitchen, A/C, genny, drop down queen bed, etc.... The hard part was finding the holding tanks that fit between the floor joist and did not hang to low. I ended up with 30 gal. of fresh water and 15 gal. each black and grey water. I ran this trailer for ten years without any major trouble until I recently upgraded to a Raptor.

  • The man who owns the local motorcycle shop in the town I live in is a real do it yourselfer. He built living quarters above his motorcycle shop in a big metal building, and has lived there for years.

He also likes to RV quite a bit, and his RV is homemade from an enclosed trailer. Neither his living quarters or his RV have windows.

There is an RV park I like that is popular with the rock-crawlers - mainly heavily modded jeeps. One family I camped next to took a fifth-wheel, took the axles off, and mounted it to the front of a large goose-neck triple-axle trailer. He left the last 20 feet to carry his jeep. I have seen him in campgrounds several times, so I know he gets a lot of use out of his rig.
  • We did a DIY conversion for kayaks and mountain bikes primarily but made it modular so you can sleep 6, haul toys, or easily convert back to cargo use.

These guys have a forum dedicated to cargo trailer conversions:

Ours is definitely a minimalist approach to a toy hauler, but some of the projects there are pretty amazing.

The dirt bike folks have some interesting ideas as well...I think it is thumpertalk.com forums

  • On our last trip there was a crew of rockcrawlers next to us. One of them had a bus which they converted to haul their truck. The first 15ish feet were living space and the remaining 20ish was a flatbed space for the truck. It had a roof over the flatbed part with the sides open. Plenty of room to work on the truck and be under a roof; very cool setup.

The original toy haulers were home made rigs. Some used cargo trailers, some used box trucks, some used a travel trailer and opened the back wall, so yes many have.

You are only limited by your imagination and wallet. Good luck.
  • I would probably go with something like This

The weight of a jeep would be a concern though.
  • Not sure what the budget is but there's a lot of horse trailers with living quarters that run from serious luxury to bear bones. Some also even come with ramps.
