- JTracExplorerHad 2 motorhomes over a nine year period and the cost of maintenance, tires and repairs wore me out. It was a hard sell with the wife but she is very happy with the fiver. Going down the road is not as convenient for the passenger but in my opinion that is one of the few areas where a motorhome has an advantage. We have auto level on the Winslow and set up is very quick. Downside is the size of the truck over a toad but I can handle it. As someone else said you can buy a pretty fancy truck and a very nice fifth wheel for much less than a nice dp. I have a friend who just bought a used 2012 40 footer and he has about $45K more in his rig, not including his toad, than we do in ours. For him money is no object so he gets what he wants. If money were no object I'd have a Prevost.
- janegowestExplorerThe thing that I am seeing very lacking in MHs is a lack of kitchen counter space. We do not eat out so we cook every day, sometimes twice a day, so this is a huge concern regarding the MHs.

Mh was 6 to 7 MPG. truck towing gets 11 and 12MPG. Not towing about 20mpg.Bird Freak wrote:
I also have had 2 MH's and now a 5er. My last Mh and current 5er are the same length with 3 slide outs. My fiver has more storage than the last MH, more living space, less expense. Fuel mileage towing is almost twice what the Mh was with toad. I don't see us ever going back to a MH.
What were your MPGs in the respective setups? - janegowestExplorerThank you! All so helpful!
- ventrmanExplorerWe had an older Motorhome without Slides. We are now in a Forest River Sierra 5th Wheel. It has a lot more Room.
- johncamtravelExplorerHave had 5 motorhomes and now we are on our second fifth wheel.
The fifth wheel is much easier to maintain. The truck is easier to get service on. Much more room with the 5er. And I find I have just as much storage room in the 5er as was in the motor home. Most of what goes wrong with the 5er I can usually fix myself. The motor home
is much more complicated with a lot more parts in it to break. The fuel mileage with the truck & 5er which is 40Ft is usually 10.5 to 11.5MPG. With our diesel pusher motor home we would get 7 to 8 MPG.
Also the 5er tows great and handles great. We are happy in our 5er and will never go back to a motor home. Hope this is of some help for you. - janegowestExplorer

- Traveler_IIExplorerWe’ve had 3 motor homes and are on our 2nd fiver in retirement. Both have advantages and disadvanges. We like the more living space in the fiver; we liked the more storage in MH’s. I like driving the tow around for shopping and exploring compared to a big truck we need for our fiver. I liked the ride better in the MH vs. the fiver. I liked backing up the MH vs. a fiver into a campsite. It’s easier to get repairs done on the truck vs. the MH. I think the setting up time for both are about the same, especially if you get the self-leveling system on a fiver. I like the large back window in the fiver when we are set up it gives a great view. The big difference is price, a nice MH cost far more than a truck and nice fiver.
