Are Open Range RV's Really Lighter?

Open Range makes a big deal in their marketing that you get more trailer for less weight. I don't see it. Floor plans that are essentially identical from other MFG's weigh almost exactly the same. I'm sure I'm missing something. Just not sure what. I'd love to hear from Open Range customers or people with insight into these things.
  • The biggest weight difference is OR's use the BAL cable system for their slides. This probably saves a couple hundreds of pounds per slide. I previously owned a 2010 OR and it was just under a 1000lbs lighter than comparable units from other manufacturers.
  • The early Open Range Trailers were lighter than the competition at the time. We have a 2009 385RLS it has 4 slides 385 sqft and comes in around 10,500 empty. At that time you could not get close to the quality of trailer and the space at that weight from anybody else. The biggest difference was the cable slide system that saved a lot of weight per slide.

Our Open Range is a 2009 337RLS and was the 162nd unit OR built. At first they had some problems but heck everyone has some startup problems. We probably have around 35-40000 miles on ours and still love it. You will not find a company that is as willing to work with you if you do have a problem. I would not hesitate to purchase another one. FYI Open Range is now a stand alone company owned by Jayco. It is called Highland Ridge home of Open Range. They are in the same building plus 2 more bigger ones where they started. Randy Graber, who started Open Range is still with the company. I had pulled all of the miles on the trailer with a 2005 Dodge 2500 with a Hemi

  • We own an Open Range Roamer. When we were looking at the Open Range, we did look at the 'light' version as well. Compared side by side, they is no comparison! The materials (like cabinets) are clearly made of lighter - and cheaper materials. They did have about the same features - just not the same materials. We didn't think the lite version was worth the money.
  • I seriously doubt that they list GVWR in the same ad with the "Lite" claims. Not Dry. Not factory. Gross!
  • And all the "lite" RVs can be towed by a half-ton, no problem, when empty. Not so much when loaded for camping.

  • Agree with the marketing hype. Lots of words with really little content. And most manufacturers have a "lite" product line with similar self praising.
  • All The Perks of A Lightweight RV Without The Sacrifices

The Open Range Light series of fifth wheels and travel trailers are the ultimate in lightweight towing and luxury. Designed specifically for late-model half ton pick ups, these units are the perfect example of what we have always stood for. More room and less weight. No other RV manufacturer packs as much into their lightweight units as we do. Come see why the Light series by Highland Ridge RV is the ultimate in lightweight RV'S.

Now what is wrong with that statement........good strong marketing HYPE

    Regardless of MFG.
Match the trailer weight to truck
Match the truck capabilities to the trailer
