Atwood water heater Thermal cutoff

Got this heater in my Toy Hauler,
an Atwood 10 gallon Electronic Ignition Water Heater. It worked great, until this weekend. Kept water molten hot, thanks to its non adjustable thermostat supposedly factory set at 140*. My thermometer says the water is closer to a scalding 165*. Maybe better, since mixing in more needed cold water will make the tank last longer.

Last weekend at Glamis we were camped up on Roadrunner and had a small sand storm/high winds for about an hour or 2. Noticed afterwards the water heater didn't work.

Troubleshot it to the thermal cut off. A one time fuseable link that (supposedly/is suppose too)break on ambient compartment over heating of 190*.
The wind was directly hitting the water heater side of the TH, so my guess is the wind somehow caused the flame/heat to back out of the combustion chamber and overheat the fuseable link...maybe, who knows... It doesn't look melted at all, or damaged in any way from heat, so maybe it just went open...?

This is the first time the thermal cut off went bad. Its the 3rd season in this TH for me. And with the thermal cut off bypassed, the heater worked perfect for the rest of the weekend.

So I need to replace it... it is there to make sure the heater runs safely and will shut it down if the flue or chamber gets clogged up with spider nests, etc... Me bypassing it was just temporary to troubleshoot and get thru the weekend. I kept a keen eye on it, and monitored it whenever I turned it on. It did work flawlessly with the thermal cut off bypassed.

Atwood wants to only sell 2 in a kit with a wire thats not needed in my application. Depending on where its purchased, its $22-30 with shipping. I know $22-30 is not a lot of money. I also know this is a $1 part without RV tax on it. I also just need 1, not 2, and don't need the 'kit' wire.

This is just a fuseable link that in an a/c electric heater cost under $1. Although the ones in electric heaters do have a higher temp they open at, or I'd use one of those.
I can't read the exact numbers on my bad TCO, so just wondering if anyone else has found/replaced these with a more appropriately priced option..?

Anyone know where to get just 1 of these. I can solder on the clips myself, just need the fuseable 190* link, preferably at a reasonable price...?

I did a little searching and also came up with what looks like the same/similar fuse-able link. But much rather just get one from you all done with terminal ends... lol

  • The thermal breakers are usually sold in pairs at just about any RV parts supply. They come with the ends installed.

When you install the new one, make sure that it is positioned away from, not above, the flue. On most heaters, that means that it will be bent 90 degrees to the left as you look at the heater.

BTW, your heater will work just fine without it until you can get a new one. Just connect the wire to the terminal that the breaker was attached to.
