axel alignment . where to have done?

My Big Horn seems to have an axel alignment problem. My front axel is showing significant toe in wear on the passenger side. Is there a way for me to correct this myself or is it something that must be done in a shop? I am located between Austin and San Antonio Tx.

Any idea what the cost to have shop do the job would be?

  • I have my 5th wheel going in tomorrow to correct one wheel on the front axle. Outside is wearing considerably more than all the other 3.

Had the same shop straighten the rear a couple years ago. One wheel was wearing more on the inside. No problems since. Rear axle tires are barely showing any wear after over 10k miles.

They fix them by bending the axle that is out of alignment. Cost is about $150.
  • Correct Track is a poor solution for a real wheel alignment. It will only adjust tracking and the RV dealer that checks it and adjusts it will probably charge more than a truck/trailer shop that does a complete alignment. In addition to adjusting the tracking which is how square the axles are with each other and the frame of the trailer (this is all the Correct Track does) they will also check and adjust toe which is whether the wheels are pointing in or out and camber which is whether the wheels are tilted in or out from top to bottom. They can adjust each wheel individually for these issues.

  • Big rig shops can do it. Semi's have solid front axles. Another option is to replace the axle - basically the cost of the axle plus a brake and bearing service to swap over the parts (probably a better long term solution). I don't know if Stone's there in San Marcos has the capability though. Don't think I'd use CW in NB. Maybe Southwest Trailers in SA or Magnum Trailers in SA or Austin.
  • We had a problem like that with our previous Cedar Creek fifth wheel. That was the time that there was a lot of bad Lippert axles out there. After determining that it was not bad axles, the dealer had us take it to a big truck and trailer wheel alignment shop. At that time it was about $100 for the fix and the factory reimbursed us. It would probably be higher now.
