Read my posts about that. I found out that the 'smell' they add is not regulated by the gov. It can differ from propane company to propane company. So the smell you are accustomed to may not be the same smell that was added to the propane that is already in your tank when or where the previous owner filled it.
Did you purchase your RV from a different state than you live in?

There is only 1 approved odorant for propane in North America... Ethyl Mercaptan and it is used world wide. There is an approved alternate odorant in Europe and it is still 50% Ethyl Mercaptan.

Any propane distributor using anything other than Ethyl Mercaptan to odorize propane is in direct violation of federal law.
  • You're not smelling propane. You're smelling the burnt dust and bug/rat turds in vents and air conduits.

You won't live long enough for propane to go bad.
  • A couple months ago I found a full propane tank I had forgotten in the shed. Is was at least eight years old.
I connected it to my grill and it fired up immediately, no problems.
Don't be concerned about the age.

I would NOT put a bug bomb in your RV. The square footage is too small for what one can is rated for safe use. And propane in too close proximity to use per their own warnings.

That and the chemicals can be deadly for your pets and you. NO matter what the can says about safe around pets after dry. The concentration in an RV negates any and all of the safe warnings. Even the brands that claim to be 'dry' spray will leave residue all over your coach.

Nope, I would not ever use a bug bomb in an RV. Just saying.

  • Make sure you have a co detector and that it is working. If you are truly smelling burt propane inside and not just dust burning off.. your heater's firebox may be bad. This would cause the heater exhaust to be vented into the rv. Best to be sure and have it checked out since the unit is new to you and hasn't been operated for a long time. You CAN NOT be over cautious when it comes to co. It will kill you.

propane smell starting to go away

Any kind will work. If you have a Dollar General in your area, they sell packages with 4 bombs in it. In a house, one of those bombs would take care of a couple room. Nothing wrong with setting one off in the front of the camper and another at the back. When it's finished and smell goes away, wipe of your kitchen counter and stove area. Everything else will be just fine. You might want to change bed linens. We usually strip all the covers off the bed. The spray landing on the mattress also helps kill any bed bug type bugs. Evidently, there's lot of bugs living in a mattress. They don't bite so you don't know they are there. I don't know, I'm just reiterating the television commercials. But I figure it won't hurt for the mist to settle right on the mattress. Then put sheets and blankets on top of that.

Bug bomb, yes. We do ours regularly in our TT.

Propane? True propane is completely oderless. Producers add the smell to the propane to help identify if there is a leak, you can smell it. Depending upon where the tank was filled, the "smell" could be different, especially if it was filled across the county from where you currently live.

Turn on a gas burner, light it. See if it burns OK. If it does, use it. No problem. When the tank gets empty, have it filled again.

    Edit:
Just reread your post. If the heater has not been fired in a year or more, you are probably just smelling dust burn off. Nothing to worry about.

x2. I have noticed this even camping in the fall when the furnace hasn't been used all summer. It will go away quickly.
