BATTERY PROBLEM IN Hitchhiker

Helping a friend with a battery charging issue in a 1995 Hitchhiker II.
Start with 2 new interstate batteries fully charged. Went camping for 3 days hooked to shore power, where everything both 12 and 120 items working.

At the ends of the third day both batteries are dead. First thought is the battery are supporting the 12 volt items but inverter is not feeding the battery.

Any and all thoughts on this problem are weklcome

  • Thanks for the help, problem solved. Circuit breaker inside converter. was toasted. I would send pictures if I could figure how.[img][/img]
  • I had a loose wire in my converter so it was not charging the battery... Everything else worked.... Thank goodness my friend came over and found out what was loose and fixed it... I'd take the batteries out and see if you can charge them with a regular battery charger... If they take the charge and stay charged my guess its either a loose wire in the trailer converter or the converter itself is bad.... At least its a place to start....

  • Your friend didn't happen to have his emergency brake switch pulled to use as a parking brake? That will kill the batteries in no time at all.
  • I found out the hard way that the disconnect had to be ON when on shore power for the batteries to charge.

  • Two new batteries and no charging. If there was a momentary spark from incorrect polarity you may have a couple of reverse polarity fuses on the 12v distribution panel blown. Mine had 2 30amp fuses side by side in the corner of the fuse panel.

Hitchhikers usually have a 120 volt outlet near the converter for the power source. Maybe the converter is not plugged in.
  • I don't know if your trailer has a builtin breaker on the battery disconnect but you may have to reset it. It is on the side of the disconnect switch on our trailer. Good luck and let us know when you have the problem solved.
  • Check the battery disconnect switch, and it is the converter that charges the battery. :)
