I agree completely! If you want to go with Hughes, don't sign on with Hughes directly! Go to any of their re-sellers in the US or Canada who do a better job and understand mobile users (Hughes do not). You will also need to have a re-seller arrange for a satellite switch if you plan to go to Alaska, for example, where the regular sat footprints don't reach.

This is not very informative-the bandwidth used will depend on your netflix settings.

Watch in HD-you will burn 3 gigs per hour or more!
Watch in SD-about 1 gig per hour
Low def- burns .3 gigs an hour

We have kids, so I use a bit of bandwidth and have pretty good experience with this. You have to adjust the settings on the online netflix site, and they will apply to all devices on the account. So we set up 2 accounts. The first we use at home, and run HD. The second account we set to "low"and use on all our mobile devices. I currently run a 20 gig plan and the boys can basically watch all they want and I keep it under the limit. This gives me 5 gigs or so for my usage, and gives them about 50 hours of watch time each month.

I do know from past experiences other SATELITTE INTERNET ops never quite made the grade. Everything back then always reverted back to VERIZON TOWERs...

Wonder what the BOATERs use running up and down the coastal places...

We use the VERIZON MIFI setup here which does NOT include any downstreaming...

I can answer your question on Gen 4, that service isn't usable for mobile service as it's spot beamed and if you move a tech has to come and re-set the service, that service compares to the other Hughes service I use that I can aim the dish myself and get on-line.

I have had a Hughes sat internet dish system (mounted on a tripod) for over 10 years and it works well. I had a plan that allowed 425 MB/DAY with an unlimited download period overnight, I've downsized to 250 MB/Day at $69/month because I wasn't using the 425. The issue of latency (distance to and from the sats)prevents VOIP services and Skype is sometimes usable but for browsing, E-mail services and downloading/uploading files it's great. Last winter in the US I tried a cell based plan to see how it compared and I was out of range (no service) more than in-range.

Sat based service is the only one where you are guaranteed 100% connectivity (except if you are parked in the trees and can't get a clear shot to the satellite!). I've used Hughes from Puerto Vallarta Mexico to the west coast of Alaska during our RV travels.

It's certainly not for everyone though. More good info is available at datastormusers.com for those interested.

You might try a combination with a 3/4G provider as backup and something like a Pep Wave Surf On-the-go router to pick up weak campground signals and make them strong in your RV.

I use verizon hotspot and have the 10 gigs and I'm on every day for a couple hrs a day and don't go over my limit - mostly forums, news, MME game and bills. Been over once ; which I think was streaming youtube etc.

I don't know how often you get on-line, or how you use the internet, but we have a couple I-phones, an I-pad, and a laptop. We each check a few things on-line plus pay bills. No steaming or downloading any types of big files.

My brother-in-law had my niece visit him for a week and she watched a few TV shows on her laptop, using his MiFi connection. The next thing he knew his 15g was gone and he was going to be charged for another 10g.

Thank you all for the information, seems that my plan to rely solely on internet will not be even close to an option at the 10 or 15GB limit.

I am currently traveling in Korea and apparently it has spoiled me. Home internet is advertised at 100MB per second.. yes 100, the best I have ever had in the states was 6. I know people who paid the extra money for 10.

Even cell phones here have unlimited data which I have use as a hotspot for streaming Netflix and other media sources. It work just as well if not better then what I have at home in the states. Hopefully Verizon, AT&T or any other US provider can figure this out soon.

Again thank you for the information looks like Mi-fi is the way to go for basic internet use.
