Braking when over weight

Hey guy's. I posted a couple other threads here about weights and most responses were of the mind set that yes im over weight but it looks like you should be ok. Sooo how will this affect my breaking? Do most find that with the FW brakes and my truck brakes i should be good? My specs again are: 2004 Dodge Ram 2500,CTD,SLT 4x4,Long bed. GVWR: 8800,load weight 2020,tow of 11850,rear axle:6000#,Front axle:5200 . Fifth wheel 33' Dry: 8850, Cargo:2350, Pin :1615. Do these numbers look to unsafe?

Thanks,

Larry

  • One sure way to tell... Firewall the brake pedal and if the wheels don't slide, you are under braked... and overloaded.

I know that sounds extreme but. Lets imagine Granny Zog jaywalks in front of you and you have to panic stop to keep from making her part of your grill.

If you cannot stop in time and wipe out granny, chances are, you'll get charged with assured clear distance and possibly vehicular manslaughter and when the attorneys get don, you'll loose everything, all because you couldn't stop in time...why..

I say panic stop your brakes and make sure you can stop if the need arises.

Driving is like Russian Roulette. The above may never happen to you, but if it does, at least be prepared. PI and/or wrongful death is always expensive for the at fault party.
  • Need to weight your truck full of passengers and fuel, then subtract that from your GVWR and that will give you the pin weight number you can legally have, Most 3/4 have a GVWR of 10,000, are you sure your lower than that.
  • Truck stops truck, RV stops RV. If you want truck to stop entire load without RV brakes you need a MD or HD truck!
  • As long as you don't pile a bunch of stuff in the truck, you'll be fine.
If you do much towing in the mountains, you might consider an exhaust brake. They're fabulous!
  • Every pound of weight increases stopping distance. Do you feel lucky?
Two idiot left turners and I stopped safely...under all maximum weights. If I was over...maybe.
