Using a carabiner, I do the same thing. I also encased the cable in a length of split loom to prevent it from getting caught up under a rail, etc.- We have ours hooked on to the side wall of the truck, it's high enough to keep it from getting into the hitch, but not mounted on the hitch.

I use a "quick link" and it serves the additional protection of insuring that the safety latch is latched and will stay latched.
I bought one of those fastway, I think that's what they are called. It shows in my pic how I hook it up. It works great.No more getting caught.It cost like 14.00.
