A Newbie here to TT forum , was a long time Fiver and Snowbird forum "troller" and poster. In the Fiver world the Emergency Brake Cable was hooked to the side of my box in the PU . It was not recommended to hook to the hitch in case of hitch failure , So where are you TT guys hooking this important line to? Thanks , Life is Good !

I guess i am guilty as I use one of the two eyelet that is part of the trailer hitch...Similar to this google photoThis is the same two eyelets that are used for the cross over chains coming from the trailer...I also have a D-RING on the end of my breakaway trailer for ease of making a connection.. I think I got this from ETRAILER or Camping World...We have trailer DOT safety inspections here in this state and this has never come up with them...Roy Ken

Total hitch failures aren't very common, but if you're still worried about it then replace one of your license plate bolts with an eye bolt and a nut. Clip your cable to the eye.

I have a lightweight chain that is attached to a cross piece under the TV and then comes out by the receiver. There are many ways to do it other than attaching to the receiver.

I attach mine to the bumper of my X which is seperate from the hitch. On my conv van I installed an eye bolt to the frame to attach it to. Like has been stated a total hitch failure isn't common, but it's good to be prepared. And it's a simple step to take. As long as you don't weave it through the safety chains like the dealer does! That renders it useless.

My Tundra has a slot in the frame near the back bumper just to the right of the hitch. I clip mine there.

If your F250 is anything like my former 2002 F250, you will find a hookup point just to the left or right of the hitch. You can just see the bottom of it in this photo of my rig. This is an extension on the truck frame and is not a part of the hitch.

Never heard of a hitch coming off a rig. That is where I hook mine. If the hitch came off I would think the force of the hitch flying off would pull the brake away cable one would hope.

CAUTION!!
I have seen the breakaway switch fail several times. I think it is because it's location means it is subject to a lot of road rash.

They tend to seize up, and become VERY difficult to pull. Often if you get them pulled, the switch falls apart.

Using a clip for conveinence will mean that the switch will rarely or never be tested.

I pull my cable every time I hook up. I then wrap the cable thru the hookup point, and then thru the loop on the cable, and plug it in to the switch
