emergency brake cable

i have a set of frame mount tie downs for my f 150 but i need to undo the e brake to put the d side one on.it comes out the floor and is split with a clip that continues on to the rear.can anyone tell me how to slack it off enough to slip one of the cables out of the clip?the torklift site is no help.
  • Are you talking a tie downs for a in bed truck camper? If so three questions.

First, does Ford allow side in campers in a F-150?

Second, the E-Brake cable should have a nut were the cable from the cab joins the cable that goes to the rear brakes. You can loosen it there to get some slack in the cable.

Third, a link to the tie downs might help us to understand just what you are working with.

  • there is no nut, just a clip where the two cables slip in at either end. please don't turn my post into a weight rating debate.the mounts are torklift f 2002 frame mounts.
  • not really.cable runs from the pedal to a clip.end sits in clip. new cable runs from other end of the clip to split cables for either tire.can anyone who actually knows about this stuff help me?

If the F150 E brake is similar to the F250 you may need to disconnect the cables at the rear axles and work your way forward to get enough slack into the main cable from the cab.

I had to replace a frozen (rusted) cable on the drivers side of my F250 and it was a real challenge disconnecting it from the equalizer.

Started at the rear axle, had to remove the cable from the holder, then disconnect the end from the e brake lever on the axle.

Then had to carefully get the other end eased out of the holder on the frame.

Since you are not dealing with a rusted cable, disconnecting at the e brake lever on the axle may allow enough slack to disconnect the cables from the equalizer (this is the place all three cables join together)..

    Hope that helps you :)
  • see don? thats what i'm looking for.just a staightforward answer. thanks guys.really appreciate it.
  • On some Fords (and I don't know if yours is one offhand) you can pull the excess cable from the pedal mechanism, then insert a pin into a hole on the pedal assembly (I was able to use a small screwdriver) to hold that spring tension off the front end of the cable. THen, if you can manage to disconnect any of the clips, you can separate any cable you want. (I was replacing the front cable on mine, and couldn't separate the clip without a hammer, punch, and solid board to whack it on)
