Bridge Heights

We have purchased a new 5th wheel which is 13'5" in height. Is this a concern on any US or Canada roads/highways. Where is the best place to obtain information regarding height restrictions when planning travel routes?
  • Go to a major truck stop they have atlases with all the info you need i use a Garman Nuvi 465 with a truck program it tells me where i cannot go. Only thing to really watch out for is major citys like Chicago the overpasses are not always marked correctly if you see new blacktop be cautious mine is 13.7 and i've had no issues. Copilot also has a nice program:)
  • At 13'-5" you have more to worry about than I do at 12'-2", because you are very near the limit. But the fact remains that we all have to pay attention at all times.
  • Watch the bridges on I-25 in Colorado. A lot of them near pueblo are 12.6 so you can't make from the east side of the highway to the west or vise versa.

Not all semi approved roads will have no clearance problems. Bridges below 13'6" will be marked. Also measure your height when hitched.

Also , watch out pulling into regular fuel stops...we have been pulling a 13'5" fiver since 2008 with no worries...

This pretty much covers it, interstates and main secondary roads used by semis will mostly be 13'-6" unless marked!
What you need to watch out for is "Parkways" around the greater NYC area, very low overpasses trucks not allowed.

There are nearly 8,000 low clearance datapoints in the Route-1 database (>7,000 in the U.S. alone). You can buy this to import into your favorite GPS app or device. Canadian and U.S. databases can be bought, with lifetime updates, for $75. Caveat; I have NOT used this, but have talked/emailed others who have, and who swear by it. Most "trucker" or "RV" GPS apps/devices only have about 1500 datapoints; many of them only have a couple hundred. See http://www.lowclearances.com/ for full info.

  • Our 5er is about the same height as yours and we have had no issues. If you are on main roads that Semi's use you will be just fine. Just have to pay attention to low hanging branches.
