Build or take whats on dealers lot

My DW says that its time for a new FW so here is my question. I would like to know if you take what is on the dealers lot close to what you want is less expensive than building the one you want. I have been looking very seriously at the GD line and there are not to many options. My wife would like a booth instead of a standing table but I have yet to see one that has a booth and is even close to our area. I would like to buy close to home for warranty work. Any suggestions would be nice.

  • I like to buy off the lot so I can see if there's any leaks. Even when new they could leak and I don't want to start off with this kind of problem even if there is a warranty.
  • We ordered ours, to get just what we wanted, and not pay for something we didn't want. We ordered it around Christmas time, so the wait was during a time we would have had it in storage anyway. When spring came, we had our special ordered 5er, just the way we wanted it.

  • We bought ours off the lot, primarily because it was equipped very much like we would have ordered it, and the price was right. Yes, we had to compromise on a few items, but the dealer was 1000 miles away and we were going to be in the area anyway for other reasons. Under these circumstances, it made sense to us to purchase the unit on the lot.

So, I guess it all depends. If you can find an RV with your "must haves", then go for it if the price is right. If not, then order it the way you want it. It's your money and your choice.

  • I ordered to get exactly what I wanted with the features, colors and options I wanted vs. what the public at large may have wanted.
Price is comparable to units on the lot.
Dealers love to order a unit that is already sold
  • We just ordered one. The reason being unable to find the options/colors we wanted. Dealer said they could install them but I had rather have them put on at the factory. Another reason is we store ours in a building. I want it fresh from the factory. One summer sitting in the sun can do more damage than we will put on it in five years unless we have an accident. They said 8 to 10 weeks. That was 5 weeks ago. So I miss one or two short trips, no big deal in the long run.

Personally, I would order exactly what I wanted, and this is what I plan on doing if I order new. Dealers tend to order somewhat cheap, so some of the options I'd like, are very hard to find on the lot. Example, I don't really care about solid counters and feel that the $1,000+ is better spent on other options, like auto-level, which seems to be hard to find on dealer-ordered units. (Now, if DW wants 'em, that's a different story.) Since my next purchase is highly likely to be pre-owned, I'll just have to find one that's close to what I want and be happy with it or spend the money to do the upgrades I want, if feasible.

Also, if only considering new, I would check with the various mfrs you're interested in and make sure they will not give you a hassle in using independent RV service for warranty. This will take you out of the "local dealer service" b.s. loop, and might save you a lot of money on the purchase.

  • We have always ordered:....and have been able to negotiate and get within or exactly the same price as one on the lot.

    Pros of ordering:
    • get exactly what you want
    • have custom upgrades or changes made right at the factory
    • get a brand new, fresh unit. Not one that has been sitting unsold and has been walked through numerous times or even used at shows
    • some floor units have even had parts pirated from them to use on other units.

    Cons:
  • you have to wait for the next factory run of that model..can be a lengthy delay

It has always worked out well for us even though we had to be patient and wait, in the end, we were glad we did.
  • Order what YOU want! We had 68 "specials" when ordering our DRV. They finally said that's enough!!!
  • Cost wise, I don't know if there are any differences between a factory order or an available on the lot model. BUT! One thing is certain, everyone has to agree on: If you order you have to wait for it to be delivered, which could take 3 or 4 months or even longer. If you take the one on the lot, you take possession immediately! It's your call. Right now or months from now?
  • I don't think I have ever purchased anything, except maybe at a restaurant, that was custom made and not "off the shelf". I say I am frugal and my family says I'm cheap. and I have only purchased used vehicles. That's just me. Cheap. :B No one here can give you "great" advice. You will decide what is best for you and your DW.
