Building my own RV

I have acquired a 5th wheel that I have stripped to the frame. A mid 90's and it is a well built frame with a tubular design, it even has new tires and batteries!! It is going to be a build something better than what was there.....

  • Defiantly will keep you all posted. I can say the demo was fun!! My friend has property where we did it. He has an excavator with a thumb that made short work of it, we had it completely stripped in 3 hours. I have already done a lot of research and watched a lot of you tube. I plan to use more conventional building techniques with a mix of metal and wood stud walls with a shallow hipped roof at the front and a gable at the rear. I'm redoing everything from the ground up... started with new bushings in the spring packs and surprised the brakes and axles are in good shape. Already have put a material list together and surprisingly it's not too expensive. I already have shortened the frame by 4 feet so it fits in my driveway nicely where I have a rv hookup. From front to back I'm at 28 feet. I'm also going with thicker floors than what was there. I'm going retro and building it with no slide outs as my previous rv experience's have been more of just "one more thing to worry about". Weight is always a concern so I will be watching this closely. I do have a few surprises as the build progresses...I will throw some pictures out there soon.
  • Sounds like a great project.
    Currently rebuilding/remodeling ours.
False wall in the slide so i can sink a flat screen into it, this was completed last week.
LED lighting is something to go with, i bought many samples on the Bay and they are cheap from china.
They have a thread here for Mod's on RV's and i will be posting there.
  • We had a member here doing that and he posted quite a few pictures also. It has been several years in the past though. If I can find it I will post a link.

  • I'd love to do this with my current Komfort. Heavy pre-Lippert Zieman frame, too. Just scrap everything from the frame up and build new...

  • Search the interwebs and youtube, if you have not already, to find the stories of others who built fifth wheels. There are at least a couple out there. I'm sure you'll gain valuable tips etc.
  • Keep in mind weight when building... Its easier now then find out an oops later!! Good Luck and Happy building Keep us all posted !!!
  • Pictures and updates are mandatory. :)

Do you have any plans to do something 'different?'
  • Cool! A friend of mine built two rvs from busses with his father, and had as much fun building as using them. Post pics as you progress!
