Buying fifth wheel

I need advice on whether to purchase a fifth wheel as my first camper.
My son (25yrs old) and I have never pulled a camper before. I have gotten some great advice as to not buy a TT for my first camper, so I have reconsidered and found a nice 2010 Gulf Stream 30fbhs fifth wheel.
I know that I have to buy another truck to pull it because mine won't do the trick.

What do you all advise me to do?

  • I have to agree with 5rdriver a one ton is the way to go. I recently did an upgrade to a 35' and was going to pull with a 2001 3/4 ton diesel (235hp). On the first long hill my pull speed dropped to 50 and I almost burnt up my auto transmission. I bought a new 1 ton long bed. If you don't get a long bed I strongly suggest you purchase a sliding hitch and make sure it is rated high enough for your trailer.

    Good Luck

  • Ditto - We started out with a 32' 5th wheel and 3/4 ton diesel truck. Just traded for a 1 ton dually in anticipation of getting a bigger 5th in the next year or two. After having a dually, I wouldn't have anything less than a 1 ton dually for a 5th wheel 30' or bigger. The 3/4 ton handled our trailer just fine but the dually gives you alot more stability and the option of a bigger trailer in a few years without having to trade trucks. It takes alot of $$$$ to upgrade the trailer and tow vehicle at the same time.
  • Start off right with a 5er. That is a good beginner size, but be aware after time you will want a larger RV. Get a TV that has enough capacity that you can go to a larger RV without overloading the TV.

Example a 3500 long bed will do nicely.
  • 5th is the only way to go in my opinion, I've pulled many different types of trailers over the years (this 5er is my first camper) and 5ths are way better pulling and more stable than a bumper pull for sure. Some states are different but most require a 5th wheel if you want to pull a boat, jet ski, or atv trailer behind it. I tow a jet ski behind mine. Of course size is a factor and so is the tow vehicle. Smaller bumper pulls are more easily towed with short box half tons. If you want a fiver you will need a Ford with a 6.5 foot box (Chevy doesn't make one that big in a half ton) or a super duty depending on weight and size or an expensive slider hitch if you have a short 5.5 foot box.
  • A fifth wheel will be a more stable tow. I have never felt sway in 3 5th wheels over the years. Semi goes by and nothing. I've been behind travel trailers with major sway. Very scary.
  • We went 15 years without camping, and at that time it was a popup and jumped right into a 5th wheel. Never regretted the 5th wheel, other than wishing it was "yikes" smaller.
  • Welp back in 95 we threw caution to the wind and purchased a brand spankin' new 28 foot traveling trailer!
Never had or towed a trailer before that.
We were soon hooked and could not stand not being out with the trailer.

Currently the wife and meself are on our third coach.
The one we have now is our second fifth wheel.
We have found too many advantages to having an FW, yet we really loved that first TT.
One feature of our TT was two entry doors, really miss that.

    I say either one.
If you're looking and asking it means you really want to.
  • Agree, it is the easiest to tow and has a lot of basement storage space. I believe. they are the easiest to back up and park also. Good luck on anything you buy,

I think the best reason to suggest a 5er is the are the easiest, and safest to tow!
You very seldom hear of sway issues with 5ers,you just need a decent hitch, not a world class Hensley hitch to try to control inherent sway issues. It is simple High School physics that will tell you that a TT is far more susceptible to to sway than a 5er.
Yes, it takes a little more truck to pull (carry) than a TT, they weigh more foot for foot, but also have more storage room.
  • Who ever suggested not buying a TT as a first RV is crazy. We have owned a MH, four TT's and now a fiver. Each has a lot of,pluss and were great during our time of life. Now the fiver is our RV of choice. As a first a TT is probably the best choice. Guaranteed you will not find an ideal RV the first time. A TT can be bought cheap and towed by lots pf reasonable trucks and SUV's. Whereas a fifth wheel generally require more truck to haul.
