For me, I've always had a long box pick up so I have thought of the front to back positioning more from a weight distribution angle. How much or how little extra weight do I want on the steer axle.
The cab to trailer concern would certainly be high on my list if I had a short box truck though. I guess the best answer would be to try several positions and see which one works/feels the best for YOU.
I have a B & W hitch and there are quite a few options as to front to back positioning and a I think three different height position options.
