CA Non Commercial Class A License Question

Yep a mere child at 65, had to get a CDL to pull doubles in CA, I'd love to give it up as it's mainly a money grab, at 72 I'd like to keep my medical card money for diesel Hahaha.

With a CDL you *don't* need for work or play:
Driving your car or pickup, get a cite = no traffic school, pay the man.
Legal alcohol limit is half for CDL license (compared to Class C) - *supposedly* only if you're driving commercial.
Tell that to hp-kids LEO chums on the side of the road who don't know any better. (Secure *that* load!)

Having had a 30 year - ahhhh 'close' association with lots of LEO's - the pep kid is correct.
Some know, some don't know - some don't care.
But....there *ARE* those who *REALLY* care (are very involved in commercial enforcement, current or past) and can be really, *REALLY* picky - both at state (CHP) and local (county/city) level.

Your right hotpepperkid, I've pulled doubles since 2007 and have never even been looked at going from Ca to Colorado and Utah and even hit Wyoming once. Just drive the speed limit and keep it all tied down.

If only that were true. The DMV in Bakersfield (biggest in the county) didn't know where or what the test was until they called an office in Sacramento. Took over 30 minutes to figure it out. If all the folks around here that tow 5ers over 15,000 got their proper license that particular office would be more prepared. They do lots of trucks just not many non-comm. I have heard the same story from many folks in person and on this very forum.

Yeah - DMV has always been lacking in one area or another.

*Smallest* DMV in Orange County, San Clemente (5 years ago):
Go to San Clem - it's less crowded, it that's possible at any CA DMV.
Have appointment.

First stop, info desk/person:
She *insisted* there was no such thing as a "Restriction -or- Endorsement 41" - *insisted* the test I wanted was a Non-Commercial Class A. Finally got her up to speed -maybe- think she simply passed me off to the test window person.

Go to window to get test. Hands me the Non-Com Class A test.
Repeat the above.
Hands me the MH test.
Repeat the above.
She asks for help.
Get correct 25Q test.

Take test.

Take to window (pass)- guy starts issuing a Temporary Non Com Class A.
Said (oops!) there would be delay until I brought in Medical Cert.
Thanks, but no thanks. Just "Endorse Me".
After asking someone for help, he got it right.

They ALL knew what a Non Commercial Class A DL was - but may still *not* have known about the driving requirement.
(Didn't need or want the Non-com. Had a 'real' CDL in the past.
Gave it up long ago - as there are "drawbacks" to having a CDL in CA if you don't need it)

I saw the CHP checking toyhaulers at Pismo for weight restrictions, the biggest flag was a triple axle pulled by a 3/4 ton truck. I wouldn't doubt they made wages that day.

Oh yea forgot about Pismo and there may be some other high profile places Im not aware of, but other than those areas there isnt much of a chance of getting stopped. I ask a CHP PIO officer if I get stopped for whatever would he/she know if I had the proper lic and he said probably not unless it was a DOT person. He said there are 700 of us and several million of you so your chances of getting stopped for anything is pertty slim. I know several LEO's and none of them knew

Once you pass the written test you then must go to special DMV locations for the driving test. (where they have room for the vehicles involved).

CHP *does* check locations (roads) frequented by serious toy haulers,
CO river, Glamis, Pismo, various race events, etc.

BTW - Don't go to those places, so why bother?

Get in an accident, and most cops will check for appropriate DL.
Even if he/she misses it - you can bet any "accident" attorney will know!
Even if not your fault - you may still be liable.!!
(Ignorance of the law is no excuse = much the same as driving w/o a license. Likewise, a claim the DMV didn't know about the license is laughable)
