Maybe they just want a piece so that the cover is useless and then they will send you a new one. Rather than shipping the whole thing back? I had a Keurig coffee maker that had issues and as part their warranty protocol, I had to send them the k-cup holder before they would ship me a new unit. The thing still worked...sort of, until I sent them the holder.
