I'm sure it has been answered very well but I like to peck and hunt so here is my take.
Things Change!
My parents wanted a nicer neighborhood for us kids. We wanted a home without any paint drips on the moldings. My DD and SIN wanted a Mid-Century Modern. Each of us had more disposable income, so we could afford these changes.
Somewhere along the line "Glitz" was born and in the habit of emulating the Joneses we bought into the NEW glitzy stuff the Joneses had.
I lived in a real cedar log lodge that was built mostly by my brother. We were ten miles out of town, two and a half miles off the hwy on a sand road. No stress and simple furnishings, wood heat and cooking, no electricity, cold running water. Most of that is gone now, someone decided to make something that looked like the rich relatives stuff and keep the price down so we bought into it. The lodge became a palace with heated towel bars and heated floors and looked good so people bought it. Not to be cynical but mostly it is the economy. How does a manufacturer stay in business? By selling stuff. We want (and enjoy) nice stuff but today it only seems to last until the next new craze.
I love our rig, are there things I would change, of course, would I by another if it had more of what I want and less of what someone else wanted?, Maybe. If the Joneses bought it, it must be nice.
Oh, and no TV here at the beach, unless you count the BluRay movie as TV.
