2005 was when they went to 17" wheels (prev 16"), and bigger brake calipers. Wheel studs went to a fine thread. Wheel offset changed. Also when they went to coil front springs (prev leafs). Not sure that last part relates to improved payload. On gasser trucks they went to a new 5sp autotrans (6.0 diesels always got the 5sp). Gassers also got engine HP increases (slight, insignificant increase on the 6.0 diesel).
So 2005 saw significant improvements, but it is generally accepted that the 99.5MY to 2004MY trucks were underrated and can safely handle near to, if not equal, payload. But you really have to watch those tire ratings on the early F250.
I think the rear diff rating went up only about 100lbs on the 3/4 ton, which is meaningless, since it is the same diff as the SRW f350.
