Canopy, cap or topper

Well I have just purchased a new truck and it came with a canopy (topper/cap), that is really nice. The problem being is that I use my 5r to work away from hame ( sometimes thousands of kilometres) and would like to haul my canopy over the cab of the track but have not found anything I feel comfortable with that would allow me to put the canopy on the top of the cab and still have confidence it would be secure.
Any comments, suggestions would be appreciated.

    Good call. I agree.
  • I think the SofTopper would handle the snow as long you broom the snow off each day.

The fabric is very heavy and the framework is pretty sturdy.

A SofTopper obviously cannot be as strong as a full fiberglass cap, but I would think it is pretty much on par with some of the run-of-the-mill aluminum caps you used to see many years ago, before the price of a pound of aluminum went through the roof.

  • Thanks for the replies but a flush type tonneau cover is not going to work as I have large sensitive equipment I pack in the back which just fits in the storage compartments of the 5'r when dismantled.
The soft topper looks interesting but would be concerned about snow load as I am in northwest bc where snow is heavy.
  • SteveB - what you said times two.

I got a soft topper in June and have used it on two trips in the up position. It worked great and it does not flap, even at 80 mph. It actually sucks in against the framework.

Now that it has been on awhile, I unsnapped it, and collapsed it forward, as if I was going to hook up the fiver. No problem.

It was a piece of cake raising it back up as ell, now that the fabric has been stretched just a tad.

It was a bit of a bear to get a couple of the snaps on when I first installed it.
  • You will need a rack that replicates the bed of the truck. And then you have the issue of the flat front up there breaking the wind. Not a good idea!!!!

    Or get one of these

  • Having a canopy and towing a fifth wheel is not going to happen with much success. You might look at folding tonneau covers as an alternative. I have a fold-A-Cover, but there are quite a few different brands that offer the same secure bed storage and fold/roll out of the way to tow. If you really want to carry it you might look at products like the Eide boat loader as a source of ideas. They have been around for years with great success.
