We only made reservations for holidays or in popular tourist areas. Otherwise, we moved from Sun-Thurs, arrived early in the afternoon and stayed over Friday and Saturday nights. I wouldn't expect to arrive late on Friday and find a site for the weekend. We didn't have any problems. We did not stay in Yellowstone. We stayed at a nearby commercial campground and drove to the park.
