Wyoming/Colorado weather in Oct.

Those are swing months, you can get it all. On a good note it will rarely stay below freezing for more than a few hours unless you are at extreme high elevations.

Can't speak for WY but can for CO - expect anything, but be aware that it all passes quickly - sunshine or snow. You can usually sit out bad weather if you're willing to wait a few days. I've camped all winter long and it probably won't be too cold then, maybe high to mid 20s at night, and if you get icy roads you can usually wait a day or two and they'll be sanded and/or clear. Avoid the mtn passes unless you know you'll have good weather. With an El Nino year, though, anything goes. You'll be OK if you don't get in a hurry.

You have a 4X4, I would not worry that much get chains for both TV and trailer no issues.

I wouldn't say you'd need chains in October. We've been in those state at high elevation at that time and had gorgeous weather. Cool at night but warms up fast. If it would happen to snow it's not going to stick for days on end. The pavement is still too warm.

X2 on what the others have said. Generally speaking October is a great month to be in Colorado. Last year I was up in RMNP at Moraine Park in October. Cold at night, beautifully crisp during the day. Trail Ridge didn't close until the end of the month, although Glacier Basin CG closed in September (as is their custom). Altitude and Latitude are determining factors.

My son's birthday is in late October (the last week) and for years, without fail, it would be beautiful the day before his birthday, and would snow either on or the day after. Go figure !:?

+1 on what the_vfox said. "Swing". Weather in Wyoming can get pretty nasty - high winds. All that said, October is still early. Barring a freak storm, I wouldn't worry about it.

Stated as many mountain states require that they be carried during winter months, or during certain weather conditions.

Personally, they never leave the TV or the 5er.

My summer homebase is at 8500 ft in the Colorado mountains. I never leave here to head south until the end of Oct. We do ocassionally get an early winter storm come through in Oct and drop some snow, but its gone the next day as soon as the sun comes out. Oct will be 90% blue sky and sunshine, just keep tabs on the forecast and sit for a day if any major storm crosses your path. Usually those early winter storms in Oct only last a day and only impact the high passes at 10,000 ft or higher. Some Oct days I'm out in T shirt & shorts here at 8500 ft, but Wolf Creek Pass, just 20 miles up the road at over 10,000 ft got 10 inches of snow.

Granted no in Wyoming or Colorado, I spend a week up with in about 30 miles of the Utah Wyoming boarder. I spend 10 days parked at 8500 feet for the Utah Elk Hunt and can tell you in the last 5 years I have been in 20" inches of snow and a temp of -3 degrees F to the mid 70's. the last couple of years have actually been rather nice, in the fact that the lows dip down to 28-30 degrees some nights but still warms up in to the 60's during the day. Hoping this year is still the same.

We have lived here for 17 years and found we can have warm, beautiful weather, or a blizzard with high winds. There is no "regular" weather here in that time frame. We keep an eye on the forecasts and hope for the best. Early winter or Late autumn, just never know...
