Considering Going From 5th Wheel to TT --- Am I crazy?

Hi Team,

Looking for some feedback and constructive critism on my logic.

Backgound
1) I own a 2010 F250 CC 2WD Diesel
2) To stay close to the trucks payload specs, we own a 28ftoot 5th wheel with a dry pin wieght of 1300 pounds.
3) Considering a Toy hauler to carry an assortment of toys and add some space.

Issue
1) Most all (if not all) 5th wheels that meet our requirements are way over the pin wieght I want to carry
2) So we arre considering a Evergreen Amped 32 GS TT. It is a very 5th wheel like TT, Very high cielings, lots of storage, etc....

So my questions:
1) am I nuts going from a 5th wheel to a TT
2) Equiped with a hensley or ProPride hitch, can I expect reasonable similar towing behavior to my Trail Air Tri Glide Equiped 5th wheel?
3) How about mileage? Will I see a drop going to a TT?

Any inputs would be appreciated...

Thanks
Dan

I did the same thing went from a 5th wheel to a TT and hated the entire experience even though I used a Pullrite TT hitch which works wonderfully it is still much more work to hitch up when compared to a fifth wheel not to mention the huge loss of storage going to a TT.
I went back to a fifth wheel and will never go back to TT.
    My .02 cents
    Cheers

    Well said.

    Had several TTs - never a 5th.
After first 5th, would never go back.

However - *if* I needed the additional storage gained by swapping back to a TT - it (a TT) wouldn't be a consideration.
Be time for a MH - and tow whatever toy/s behind that.

OP - do whatever *YOU* would like to do - that fits *YOUR* lifestyle!..:C

  • "With my limited 5th experience, TT has lower ceiling, and the "feeling" of being smaller."

I concur with this statement...it is why I never considered a TT. However, the Evergreen Amped is very 5th wheel like. When in it you would swear you are in a 5th wheel. 8 and a half foot cielings, step up bedroom, pass-thru storage under bedroom, 7 foot slide hieght, etc.

It is surprisingly cavernous inside. Here is a link:

Evvergreen 32GS TT, pass thru storage, 101 inch cielings, etc...
  • Easier entry and frees up your truck bed. And I don't care what they say I would rather back up a TT

YES, absolutely! All TT owners are nuts! lol
With my limited 5th experience, TT has lower ceiling, and the "feeling" of being smaller.

Everyone I've talked to and everything I've read says that 5th wheels tow nicer. With the TT, weight distribution with the TT is EVERYTHING. Not just a "weight distributing" hitch (which you should have), but also where the weight is in the trailer - too much in the front or too much in the back will change towing characteristics. With our smaller TT I put blankets and sleeping bags in the front of the TT just to get that little bit more tongue weight, seems to help with ease of towing. You will figure out what works for your setup.
    3) How about mileage? Will I see a drop going to a TT?
If anything, you might see an increase in fuel mileage. The TT will probably be a bit lower and possibly less wind resistance. But don't expect a substantial increase.

    Any inputs would be appreciated...

  • I pulled a 29 foot Coachmen Catalina TT for 6 years with a Hensley-Arrow and GMC Sierra 2500 HD Duramax. I purchased a 34 foot Montana 5th wheel in the spring of 2014 and took off this summer for all kinds of fun. The one advantage I noticed in pulling the 5th Wheel vs. a TT was the fatigue factor. On reflecting on our travels this summer we realized how pulling the 5th wheel was easier on our bodies and minds over long distance then the TT. We pulled from Bakersfield, California –to Eastern Washington – over to the Oregon Coast and then home with both rigs.

Edit: Guess I should update my sig
  • If the TT fits your needs better than the fiver go for it.
I towed my prior TT with a Hensley and it towed just as well as my current 5'er A Hensley or PP will tow just as well as a 5'er.
I imagine MPG's will be similar.
  • Not crazy at all. It would be crazy to get something other than what suits your needs just because someone thinks a fiver is somehow cooler.
  • No, you are not "nuts" for wanting to change. The reality is, your "old needs" have changed so now you are considering alternatives to accommodate your "present needs". Nothing wrong with that. You simply want the right equipment for the right job, on a budget that fits your current situation.

I don't understand why so many uses the term "upgrade" when going from one type of camper to another. It's not an "upgrade" at all, it's a change in needs. And we all should be grateful the RV industry has provided a good variety of campers to accommodate everyone's "need" as well as our "wants" too.

Get the toy hauler and be happy!

I do not see any impact in your fuel mileage. You might even get slightly better if the trailer has a lower profile than your 5er. Also, with a trailer, you gain full use of the bed of your truck, in addition to the space in the toy hauler!

Good luck ... go for it and live the dream!
