cracked nose cone fix?

I posted a while back about a crack in the nose cone on my 2002 R-Vision Feather-Lite. The nose is ABS plastic. From the research that I could find-not much info-This was a common problem for 5ers of this brand at that time, as well as I could read the biggest cause was cold weather. I first tried to just epoxy over the crack. It did not last long and mid way through the winter I noticed another crack on the opposite side of the cone, so for the remainder of this winter I just went ahead and put some heave duty duct tape over the crack to keep water from getting in. Three weeks ago we had some good weather.

My dad thought it would work if we mixed up some resin and put a fiberglass cloth patch over the cracks. We had some major temp variations over the last week or so and it has held up so far.

My father is now thinking we need to reinforce what we did with a larger sheet. He is wanting to do the top 2 feet or so all the way across. My big question is....if we chose to do this could the cold temp contraction cause the cone to pull away from the side walls of the camper?

other advise?
  • Don't know if your fix will work but if the crack went all the way through the material, I hope you stop drilled the ends to keep it from growing under the repair..

I did drill the end of the crack. It did go through to where I could see insulation.
  • If you fiberglass the nose, be sure to use a good solvent to remove any mold wax or polishing wax. Then rough up the area to be glassed with sandpaper. Been there done that.
  • As long as you roughed up the area either side of the crack by doing some grinding & spanned the crack by an inch or so either side, you should be good.

The great thing about working with fiberglass is you can grind out your mistakes & start again. Great stuff to work with once you get past the initial fear of using it & get the hardener part down.

It is not a trailer front cap but, with the help of an experienced friend, we built this top from scratch.

Almost a months work to build it. The time was creating the mold.
