Curt Hitch Rebuild?

My 5th wheel is making a loud clunking noise when either accelerating hard or braking; sounds like the kingpin is not snug enough but not sure. Is there a rebuild kit for Curt 5th wheel hitches? How would I know if its ready for a rebuild & whats rebuilt?
  • No similar problems here - call Curt they are very helpful and know how to help in most all cases.

I would try greasing the plate and plate on the pin box. It's surprising how much dampening grease creates when it's under pressure, works like a shock absorber. Anytime mine would clunk on stop or take off, I would grease the hitch and it stopped the problem.

A lube plate (Teflon disk)would be far better, and cleaner.

I use that on my Curt since new and it's clean and no noise. I also lube the jaws and the zerk fitting in the center of the jaws.

  • I have a curt hitch and at times have the same type of noise. I would first off call curt and ask them if a rebuild kit is out there. I have had mine going on five years and have found no wear on the jaws, but then I put a small amount of grease on the king pin before each hook up. Look and make sure the pads are in place where the steel rod holding the two together sits.
  • Some hitches just have more slop in them, causing the clunk. Has your hitch always clunked, or did it just start recently?

My former hitch made the same noise as yours, right from new. The hitch I have now, makes no noise at all.

Thanks, I take it you mean the grease fittings on the hitch.
