Curt slider hitch set up question

I have a 2016 Ram 2500 4x4 and have purchased a used 5th wheel trailer from a guy in another state.
I am installing the Curt Q16 slider hitch in the truck and ran into an issue I could use some help with...
The rails are in the truck, and the hitch head is ready to install on the slider. The head has a variety of height settings, and I'm at a loss as to where the height needs to be set at.
Obviously, I'd like to have it all installed before I leave to pick up the rv.. Any advice as to height adjustment would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  • you'll have to hook the trailer to it. You could start at the highest to ensure bed clearance to you get it adjusted. either way, its not going to be too far off.
  • Call the seller and ask him how high is the king pin plate from the ground when trailer is level and how far down from FW is the king pin plate. When you allow for a little truck suspension drop you have your answer after ensuring about 6 inches for truck bed to 5ver clearance.
  • Since your new to it and just picking it up to get it home start on the top(highest) and once it's home you can adjust it to what you need.
You want to have around 6 inches of clearance.
We just brought home our new 5er and I had to raise the head up on slot as it was to low and only had 2-3 inches of clearance.
Easier to try and do it at home than guess when your in a rush.

Thanks. That's my intent, to fine tune it at home. However, I have a 7 hour drive to get home so I'm trying to "ballpark" it as best I can before I leave
  • That is a ride... Hm.

Well bring the tools with you and get it close there.
Tighten it all up and bring it home.

It's empty so even tho it is a 7 hr ride you would be ok getting it back.
  • Yeah, set it high. You will be fine.

I just installed that exact set up in my Chevy, and set it on the lowest. Still had to have the dealer drop the pin box to the lowest setting to level her out.

    Good luck, and congrats!
  • I m afraid to set it too high as my ram 4x4 sits higher than a Silverado. Don't want to throw all the weight on the rear axle if the trailer.
