Day-night shade string slipped off peg

The string on one side of a day-night shade slipped off its peg. (The peg has a broken end.) Shade is 20'' wide by 32'' tall. String that slipped off still runs up from bottom piece through blind all the way to top, and looks to be OK. But it got sucked back through the hold in the end-cap of the bottom piece.

I THINK that string has not broken and might somehow be fished out of the bottom piece. I can remove the plastic end-caps from the bottom piece and peek inside, but don't know how to remove the bottom piece (don't know what else to call it) or how to reach down inside to get access to string.

If I have to replace shade the I think I'll go with aluminum blinds.

  • Keep in mind you can find a string diagram & video on fixmyblinds.com if need be. Also when reinstalling bobbin (steel jo-ann way to go) the left bobbin goes counter clockwise and right clockwise. Make for less drag wear on the left string.
Piece of cake to restring only takes few minutes. Took longer to remove the shade then to restring it....
Just finished doing four shades in the rig. Trying to get folks to slow down while opening and closing to prevent quicker friction wear on the strings.
  • After removing the end pieces from the bottom piece, it will just slide to one side. You can then rethread the string.
  • This is what I did. From JoAnn Fabrics or a like store, obtain several metal bobbins. I replaced all of my spools with the bobbins, using the same screw. You can re-thread the string around the bobbin and it won't break again. I don't know why the mfgrs didn't do this in the first place.
I don't remember if I had to put a washer on the front of the bobbin or not. If you need to, just buy some small washers and you should be good to go!
You should be able to get the string back through the hole in the bottom piece without a lot of problem if you don't raise/lower the blind. (This causes the string to move inside the blind) The first time this happened to me I was on the road in WA and I had a blind place fix it. I watched how they did it and then fixed the rest myself. It really wasn't hard. Particularly if you just have to change the spool with the string still around it.
