Decal care

Just got new 5er, previous one had decal disease and was a source of displeasure for DW. Have checked previous posts on care of decals but they were older. Older posts seemed to suggest 303 protective was a good choice . Are you aware of anything better at this point ( new and improved or at least "now gluten free").
  • I wish that I could tell you of a great product to use one your decals but IMO decals will self destruct in 5 to 10 years. The best way to extend there life is to keep them out of the sun and that is not easy with a RV.
  • X2 on keeping it out of the sun. We always keep our camper under a cover when not camping. The covers last about 2.5 years. Our 2003 fifth wheel paint and decals still look great. It always amazes me to drive by a storage lot and see all those rv's and boats out there baking in the hot sun and then hear some of the owners complain about decals 4-5 years later. What do they expect?
  • Agree with all keeping the decals out of the sun, but as some of us are in the sun most of the time, 303 is probably the next best bet if applied correctly. That is what I use and on the former trailer, the decals expired at about 10 years. Direct Texas sun 99 percent, I felt like we did pretty good. Shade it as much as possible but the inevitable will happen IMO.
  • We use 303 but it does not help much. Decals are not crumbling or cracking but they are spotted. We will eventually just have them painted on.
  • I use 303 but cannot testify to its effectiveness because the rig stays under a cover except when in use.
  • Keeping it out of the sun is important. Other than that, the only factor that makes a real difference is the quality of the decal stock. If it's quality stuff (like that made by 3M), it'll be good for a lot of years. The cheap stuff (like on my Cruiser) will start to fade & flake in a year or 2.

Waxes & protectants just do not help much. UV is the enemy & to block UV, you have to apply something with pigments in it.
  • I have not used this stuff but it sounds good to me. One of our members posted about it here. Might be exactly what you are looking for.:)

  • Traded in a 2005 HR last year and the decals looked great. I used 303 and it was under a shed but the front and sides still got a lot of sun.

I think the decals on the 05 were a lot thicker material than the new ones.
  • Out of the sun as much as possible and washing plus hand waxing.
