Denver to Dallas

I pull a 36ft. fiver. I was looking at a route that takes me from 70 over to US 287 south to Amarillo and over to Dallas. I guess I need to know if this route is friendly to 13 ft. high fivers etc. Thanks

  • Ahh, the Northwest passage as we called it here in Texas. The most traveled route to Colorado and back there is. It is an RV friendly route. Depending on where you are going In the DFW area, try and not take 287 thru Ft Worth, the most expensive expansion/revamp ever is from the I820 loop on the north side of FW on south to I30. If you are going to the North Side of Dallas, cut off at Decatur, TX on 380, across thru Denton and then go on towards Mckinney, you can then go down to your Destination from several other routes that way. Just try and stay away from Dallas proper.
  • Have used both routes talked about here and both are good. Another variation is to take US 50 between Pueblo and Lamar where you pick up US 287/US 385. My GF claims this is the route used by buses and that they try to find routes that offer faster routes with less elevation change.
  • We pull a 35' 5er from DFW area to Walsenburg (south of Denver) and turn west every summer. And return same route.
US 287 DFW area to Amarillo to Dumas, US 87 to Raton, I-25 to Walsenburg. All good roads.

Ahhhhh, 287 & the Texas panhandle. There be some lonely sections of road out there. Had a breakdown out there once, turned out to be contaminated fuel.

Roadside assistance, lucky to have a cell signal, wanted a nearby landmark. Uh....there is NOTHING out there!

And the open spaces are what appeals to some people .

70 to Limon - 40/287 down to Kit Carson - continue on South on 287 down through Lamar and on down and across Texas to Fort Worth/Dallas.
Did it in June with similar rig and had no prob.

287 is a good highway - not an Interstate, but 4 lanes between most towns and lots of local and national food stops.

.............You'll be on I25 all the way to Raton , Raton Pass has a fairly steep grade for several miles so make sure your braking systems are in good shape ! Once you get through Raton , you should have good highways all the way into Dallas . , jf
