Don't know what your trailer is but did you considered the weight issue, LT235/85 R16 have a max load of 3042 lbs, the LT225/75 R16 have a max load of 2680 lbs.
Thanks trailer is small 5th wheel with 4400 pound axles... - 07PSDCREWExplorer

Seeing as how the OP mentioned the trailer had 15" tires and someone put the larger 16" on, I think he will be fine with that capacity loss while sticking with a similar, smaller 16" tire - bogart661ExplorerDon't know what your trailer is but did you considered the weight issue, LT235/85 R16 have a max load of 3042 lbs, the LT225/75 R16 have a max load of 2680 lbs.
- BB_TXNomadMine is not the same size. And the spare has never touched the ground in 7 years. Just there to get me to a tire shop if needed.
As far as that goes, the spares on my trucks and my DW's vehicles have not touched the ground in many many years.
I do not rotate the spares on any thing. - donn0128Explorer IIIf the spare tire is more than 7 years from mfg date the chances of failure if used even for a short time go up dramatically. Look for the DOT code on the tires sidewall there will be a 4 digit code there.

Not unless it is past the expiration date. That is what? Maybe an inch difference i would not worry about it knowing the soare would only be on long enough to get a repair or replacement.
Expiration Date? Please elaborate.... - cruz-inExplorer

why are you going smaller?
if you want the same height go to a LT245/75/16 E
when i changed out that what i did
ST235/80/16D and when to a LT245/75/16E
My trailer was originally designed for 15 inch tires. It was upgraded to the current 235/85 r16s. The clearences are very tight with the 235/85 r16. Slightly smaller (diameter and width) helps alleviate these issues..... - Mark_HeislerExplorer IIwhy are you going smaller?

The LT225/75-16 E is 29.4" tall.
As donn says the 235/85 will work fine as a spare tire on a trailer. IMO a spare just gets you to the next tire store/repair facility.
My spare tires on any of my trailers (RV or working) are rarely the same size.
Now if your the type that wants to rotate the spare into axle system then I would use the same size. - donn0128Explorer IINot unless it is past the expiration date. That is what? Maybe an inch difference i would not worry about it knowing the soare would only be on long enough to get a repair or replacement.
